6 health and fitness tips to help your resolutions stick
Health and fitness goals rank high when it comes to resolutions.
Don’t be discouraged by the stats, though, that say few people will actually follow through on their healthy vows. (Just 8 percent of people achieve their resolutions, according to a University of Scranton study).
Let math play in your favor, instead. If you want to lose weight this year, it simply comes down to creating a calorie deficit. If you want to lose a pound a week (hey, that’s 52 lbs in a year!), you need to eliminate 3,500 calories every seven days (or 500 calories per day). There are plenty of ways you can go about creating that calorie deficit — perhaps using portion sizes to cut out 200 calories a day and exercise to torch the remaining 300 calories.
What will set you apart from the masses who don’t achieve their resolutions? An action plan!
Here are 6 ways to make sure you follow through with your wellness resolutions.
Keep a gym bag packed:
Stay on the (treadmill) track and make sure you hit the gym as planned. Getting there is half the battle, especially in the winter months when it’s cold and it gets dark early.
A few tips: Go during non-peak hours so you can get a more efficient workout, write down your scheduled time at the gym in your day planner and treat it like any other important appointment and get a workout buddy to help you stay accountable.
Also, always keep a gym bag packed so you’re ready to go. (It’s easier to hit the gym on the way home from work).
An Under Armour duffle makes for a perfect gym bag because it’s big enough to store a change of clothes and all of your workout accessories, but also flexible enough to fit into a locker. (Tip: Consider it an investment because it can double as a carryon when you travel). Under Armour Storm Duffle, $79.99 (plus Cash Back), SportsAuthority.com
Join Weight Watchers:
When it comes to losing weight, we love the Weight Watchers approach. The plan is all about being able to enjoy food, but in a healthy moderation. The program has a new “SmartPoints” plan that nudges you toward a healthier eating pattern making healthy choices second nature. Weight Watchers has several models to fit your lifestyle. Plans include weekly meetings, online tracking and virtual coaching. You can get $18 Cash Back and save $20 on your Weight Watchers purchase through ShopAtHome.com.
Set aside an hour or so each week to plan out healthy meals for the week before you go grocery shopping. Don’t forget to factor in lunches and healthy snacks. You’ll save money (another popular resolution!) by eating at home and packing your lunch and you’ll inevitably cut back on calories by avoiding those huge restaurant portions.
One of our fave cookbooks for healthy, but delicious, recipes is The Skinnytaste Cookbook. The author also runs a recipe blog and factors in Weight Watchers points, which nicely complements the SmartPoints plans for those signing up for Weight Watchers. Each week, she shares her family’s meal plan with recipes from the site and cookbook. The SkinnyTaste Cookbook, $18.36 (plus Cash Back), BarnesandNoble.com
Do workouts at home:
For those days when getting to the gym is out of the picture (hello, snow day!), have a backup plan in place! Transform your living room into a workout studio with a set of DVDs from BeachBody.
Go ahead, snub the crunches. You can carve out amazing abs and burn fat with Hip Hop Abs. The workout comes with four DVDS with dance routines that flatten and sculpt your abs, while getting a fun cardio workout. Hip Hop Abs, $19.95 (plus Cash Back), BeachBody.com
Socialize over activities:
Check out your social calendar. We’re willing to wager that food is a common theme when it comes to plans you make with family and friends — whether it’s happy hour, brunch, meeting for lunch or grabbing dinner. Switch up your plans, and get together over an activity, instead. This winter, have fun while burning calories — and go ice skating, snowshoeing or even tubing. Check out Groupon for deals on activities in your city.
Once you’ve gained some momentum and start losing weight or tone up, you’ll start to notice your clothes are fitting a little looser.
