How to update your patio furniture
Spring has sprung, summer is nearly here and it’s finally time to spruce up the home’s best room. That would be the outdoor “room” — whether it’s a tiny patio off a contemporary apartment, or the sprawling porch of an old home.
First, assess what you have. Perhaps all that’s needed is a new set of cushions for your sturdy old chairs. But if you’re starting from scratch, take a few notes before you shop.
First, consider the use of the space. If you’re planning to do nothing but sip drinks and wave to neighbors, a couple of Adirondack rockers may be perfect. But if you’re dreaming of dining in the great outdoors, you’ll want a sturdy table and comfortable chairs.
Second, measure the space. Nothing would be worse than hauling a patio set home to discover you can barely squeeze between the back of a chair and the railing.
Finally, consider the elements. If you’re in a windy area, you’ll need something with weight, like cast-iron. If you plan to pick up those chairs and move them from one end of the porch to the other – or from porch to garden – consider lightweight wicker.
We’ve offered a few selections for those ready to head outside for the season:
Sit back and relax:
A classic chair can work two miracles: Help you relax after a long day, and spiff up your porch. This classic Adirondack chair is made tough, and it comes in classic white, green, wood-tone or (to really make the neighbors notice) red. Folding Wooden Adirondack Chair, $239 (plus Cash Back), llbean.com
Small space? Consider a “conversation starter” – that is, a seat that will fit the two of you, and a table just big enough for dining al fresco. Garden Treasures Cascade Creek 2-Piece Steel Conversation Set, $269 (plus Cash Back), lowes.com
Dining in style:
These wrought iron chairs and table are heavy enough to withstand wind. Look for a set, like this, that’s powder coated, thus won’t rust. Coil-spring bases on the chairs allow for a bit of rocking motion. Hamlake 5-Piece Wrought Iron Motion Patio Dining Set, $449.99 (plus Cash Back), target.com
Iron is lovely if you don’t have to move it around, but if your gatherings involve guests playing “musical, movable chairs,” wicker is a classic. It’s easy to clean, fun to “deck out” with cushions and pillows, and oh-so comfortable. Gray All Weather Wicker Solano Chair, $139.99 (plus Cash Back), Worldmarket.com
