3 affordable fall activities
The weather may be getting colder and the leaves may be dropping, but that doesn’t mean the excitement has to slow down.
Fall is a great time of year to have some seasonally inspired adventures — on the cheap.
Here are three fun and affordable fall activities to spice up the season.
1. Take photos of the changing leaves.
Check your state for the most popular scenic drives or hikes to witness Mother Nature’s transition into fall. Make a special day out of it by packing a camera and a picnic. You can find a wide selection of picnic baskets at Macys for great prices, many of which are discounted right now due to the season.
Looking for something a little different? You can also find historic train excursions, guided tours or even zip line rides through forests. Picnic Time Canasta Picnic Basket, on sale $59.99 (plus 3% Cash Back), Macys.com
2. Toast pumpkin seeds.
Pumpkin spice has taken over the shelves and menus, and gourds are about to take over our porches. When you carve your pumpkin this fall, keep the seeds and toast them for a healthy, simple and inexpensive seasonal snack.
Toasting pumpkin seeds couldn’t be easier. Spread them out on an oiled baking sheet and roast for about a half hour. Then season them to your liking, from simple salt to chili powder, and bake for another 20 minutes or until they’re crunchy.
Don’t feel like roasting your own? Even a pre-made bag at the store will only run you a few bucks. Eden Organic Salted Dry Roasted Pumpkin Seeds, $3 (plus 2% Cash Back), Walmart.com
3. Use the fallen leaves for art projects.
Pinterest is packed with inspirational craft ideas revolving around fallen leaves, but one that is as simple as it is sweet is to bring the fallen leaves inside for a fall-themed centerpiece. If you have kids, decorate them with glitter and glue and markers. OK, even if you don’t have kids, you can personalize the leaves however you want.
To run with the Thanksgiving theme, take metallic colored Sharpies and write on each leaf something you are thankful for. Hook the leaves on branches in a vase and gaze at your “gratitude tree” every mealtime. Sharpie Metallic Fine Point Permanent Markers, $8.87 (plus 2% Cash Back), Walmart.com
