The 3 scariest, craziest haunted houses in America
By Aimee Heckel
We’re feeling inspired by Buzzfeed’s “44 Best Photos of Scared Bros at a Haunted House 2013.”
OK, maybe we’ve just laughed ourself past the point of logic, but it has us wondering: What are the craziest, scariest haunted houses in America?
Here are the three scariest, craziest haunts in the nation that have us trembling in our booties — much like “scared bro” No. 3.
1. Knott’s Scary Farm in Southern California.
This haunt — SoCal’s largest Halloween extravaganza — was named the Top Haunts Magazine winner for 2013, and here’s why. It features five mazes, six scary shows, nine terrifying rides, five different spooky scenes and two “experiments.” These are what make Knott’s Scary Farm a Halloween destination.
These “experiments” are interactive and reservation only. The first experiment, which launched and immediately sold out last year, puts participants in the middle of trying to solve crazy puzzles and figure out mind-bending contraptions. You are no longer just a passive participant; you are the entertainment. The description of other experiment “The Witch’s Keep,” is vague and mysterious. All we know is the entrance is marked with an explicit warning: “Beware of the Witch’s Keep!”
Knott’s Scary Farm runs through Nov. 2, and tickets start at $38. Plan your trip here. Use these travel coupons to save you money on airfare, rental cars and lodging.
2. Blackout in NYC and LA.
The LA Times called this theatrical haunted house “beyond haunted.” No one under 18 allowed. No speaking allowed. And the biggest catch: You. Must. Walk. Through. Alone.
Blackout hits NYC and LA through Nov. 10. And it’s scheduled to come to Chicago in December. Now that’s an interesting Christmas celebration.
See pictures of Blackout on its Facebook page, and prepare to be completely creeped out.
3. Erebus Haunted House, in Pontiac, MI.
Full-contact haunted houses are a growing trend, taking scary to a whole new level. Here, the haunts touch you, hit you and the monsters even eat you. Erebus is a four-story haunted house and one of the largest in the world, with rankings in the Guinness Book of World Records.
