4 great dorm gifts for your college kids
By Aimee Heckel
There is the first Christmas. The first day of school. The first car. The first boyfriend you have to kick out of the house. And alas, the first ever housewarming gift for your now-grown are-they-seriously-in-college kids.
Maybe housewarming is a bit ambitious. Dormwarming?
Not sure what those darn whippersnappers like these days? Here are a few great dormwarming gifts for your college-bound kids — practical, so you won’t have to lie awake at night worrying about their very survival, but stylish enough that they will actually use them.
1. For cooking (or at least reheating pizza)
Don’t rely on the dorm cafeteria for all of (or any of) your kids’ nutrition intake. Since you can’t exactly install a full-sized kitchen in their dorm room, pick up an iWave Cube instead. This mini microwave is lightweight and takes up less than a cubic foot. You know it’s cool because it starts with a lower-case i. Only $99.
2. For showering
Unless your kid is one of the lucky elite with a private shower, a shower caddy is going to be essential. But the plastic crates are, well, plastic. And crates. How about a gorgeous Vera Bradley shower caddy bag instead? This compartmentalized, waterproof bag can be folded up to save space, when not needed. $35 at Zappos.com.
3. For their expensive gadgets
An iPhone alone can cost more than many college kids spend on food in a year. Don’t risk your kid’s phone and iPad getting lost or stolen. Get him an anti-theft iPad bag. Store gadgets safely in locking compartments. On sale now for $52.72 at Dormco.com. Use this coupon to get cheap shipping on your entire order from Dormco.com.
A gift certificate to somewhere like Uncommon Goods would be a great gift. Or consider one of these fun dorm decor ideas:
- A cardboard animal head, starting at $31.
- Cute Zodiac throw pillows, $38.
- Hand of Buddha jewelry stand, $35, a clever way to store necklaces and rings.
- A skateboard stool, $195, made out of recycled skateboards.
