4 inspired themes that will make your baby shower one-of-a-kind
By Aimee Heckel
If the idea of baby shower horror games like sniffing melted chocolate in diapers and having a milk-chugging contest are more mortifying for you than the actual delivery of your baby, have no fear. There are plenty of creative baby shower options that don’t involve the typical cheesy games and boring present-opening circles.
Here are our four favorite creative baby shower ideas:
1. Make it retro inspired. And Kanye West inspired. (A sentence we never thought we’d say.) Ever since Kanye West surprised Kim Kardashian with the most thoughtful baby shower gift — vintage copies of books that her dad used to read to her as a kid — we’ve been mulling on the idea of a retro-themed baby shower.
Pick up an edible Pac-Man cake topper from EdibleMeImages on eBay.
As centerpieces: Framed photos of the parents-to-be and their relatives as babies. Serve the mom’s favorite childhood meals. We love this idea paired with an adult spin, like mac and cheese using exotic cheese and spotted with fresh broccoli.
Incorporate retro toys into the decor, like a Lincoln Logs cake stand (psst, you can still find Lincoln Logs at Wal-Mart), a She-Ra cake topper and Care Bears clutching bowls of rainbow Skittles for a snack. Make a “Back to the Future” time capsule, looking back on the year mom was born.
2. Make it a “craving party.” This one’s sure to make the mama-to-be smile. Serve up all of her crazy pregnancy cravings — at once. Pickles and honeydew ice cream? Hey, why not. Taco Bell with a side of cottage cheese? Don’t knock it until you’ve tried it.
Indulge mom’s greatest desires the whole party. Roll out a couch, cot or hammock for her to lie on while opening presents and watching sappy commercials on loop. Watch old home movies and weep. Make a game out of folding clothes and reorganizing furniture. If you’ve ever been knocked up, you know these activities sounds amazing.
3. Float it out. Rent out a pool after-hours for a private floating party. Bobbing in the water gives pregnant joints a rare opportunity to feel weightless. Serve mock-tails on floaties and decorate the pool with dozens of floating balloons.
4. It’s a boy? Hello, mustache party. Mustaches are silly. So are baby boys. What better way to welcome your little man into the world than with a mustache party? Give all guests sticky ‘staches to wear. Load up on mustache decor for a Little Man Baby Shower at the Party Perfect Design Etsy shop.
