The 4 best travel-inspired movies
By Aimee Heckel
As the days grow chillier, the idea of snuggling up on the couch with a blanket and a good movie grows sweeter.
Instead of outside making your own adventures, for many of us it is the time of year to recover, daydream and plan.
Here are our favorite four travel-inspired movies to help you do just that.
1. THAILAND: “The Beach.”
You may remember this 2000 adventure film starring Leonardo DiCaprio for its incredible scenery — filmed on a Thai island. The premise of the film: One young man’s pursuit of a tropical beach paradise. Many travelers have since set out to visit the Maya Bay beach where this movie was filmed, to get a glimpse of paradise for themselves.

2. INDIA: “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel”
Last year, this acclaimed British movie drew movie-lovers’ eyes to India and the charming Marigold Hotel in Jaipur. The movie follows British retirees who travel to India to stay in the hotel — and plenty of adventures along with it.
Most filming took place in Rajasthan, at an equestrian hotel named Ravla Khempur. (Find the hotel on Facebook here.)
3. ITALY: “Under the Tuscan Sun”
If you saw this movie in 2003, you surely were swept away by the wanderlust it evoked. It’s worth watching again. And again. This film, starring Diane Lane, brings viewers along with a struggling woman who buys a crumbling Tuscan villa on a whim. Oh, what wouldn’t we all give to spontaneously move to Tuscany, too? Happy endings, beautiful scenery and romantic fantasy. Yes, please.
4. FRANCE: “Julie and Julia”
This deliciously enticing 2009 movie brings you to Paris in the ’50s. It’s the story of Julia Childs, and her French cooking and contagious inspiration. Even if you don’t enjoy cooking, this film is seasoned with fantasy and oh so filling, on a soul level.
