5 plus-size fashion ‘rules’ that are meant to be broken
Oh, fashion. You’re so silly. One year, you tell us not to dare wear horizontal stripes and then the next year, what do you know? Bold horizontal stripes are all the rage and majorly in style.
There are some pretty ridiculous fashion rules out there that are just begging to be broken. Raise your hand if you don’t plan on putting your white away after Labor Day. And give us a high five if you shrug off old-school rules that call for your bag, shoes and belt to match. But among the silliest, most absurd fashion rules exist in the plus-size world.
Here are five rules that are made to be broken — with gorgeous pieces found at Lane Bryant. When you shop through ShopAtHome.com, you can get 2.5 percent Cash Back on your purchases.
Avoid stripes: Stripes are actually great wardrobe staples perfect for pattern mixing, pulling off the nautical look and to be worn casually. Finding the perfect stripe of course depends on your body type — but shop for one that will bring balance to your outfits. Look for a medium-width stripe that’s in between wide, color-blocked stripes and tiny Breton stripes. Lane Bryant takes the guess work out of pattern mixing with its Stripes and Dots Layering Top. A striped chiffon top is layered over a polka dot tank. Genius.
No heels: Scratch this rule out, too. Heels are a great way to add height and slim your figure. Wider-width heels — which are especially trendy on boots this fall — look awesome. Lane Bryant has several, but our fave is the studded ankle boot that adds just the right amount of edge to your shoes.
Wear black: Give the dark hue a rest. Yes, it’s chic. But navy and charcoal can also having slimming effects. Pop color into your wardrobe for a bright and cheerful look. This fall, rich hues of autumn shades — burgundy and mustard are trending. But we’re welcoming the unexpected arrival of teal.
Avoid shift dresses: The loose fitting dresses are thougt to be reserved for skinny minnies. But we don’t buy it. Sizing is key. You don’t want to look like you’re drowning in fabric — so try adding a belt to a shift dress to define your waist. We also love the idea of a sweater dress for autumn — like the Geo Sparkling dress from Lane Bryant that has a Missoni-like feel to it. The dress draws from fall’s best colors, adds in a subtle sparkle to the threads and becomes super-flattering with three-quarter sleeves, a square neckline and a lightweight knit and full liner slip.
Skinny jeans are just for skinny girls: No, no, no. Not true. Skinny jeans and leggings can work great on all figures — and no matter your size, one rule applies. Balance. If you’re wearing the slim legged jeans balance it out with a looser fitting tunic or blouse. We like skinny jeans best with heels.
