6 new twists on classic summer treats
Summer is a season filled with backyard barbecues, sprints through sprinklers and tales around bonfires. Our summer memories are littered with catching fireflies and playing tag in the yard, only to be called inside to enjoy a delicious treat.
So, as we look forward to all the season has to offer, we thought we’d share some new twists on those classically scrumptious eats we have been dying to get our hands on since spring. Here’s a taste.
Classic treat: S’mores
New twist: We have to admit there is nothing better than that gooey little sandwich that oozes a chocolate and marshmallow mess around the campfire. Or is there? Ali Ebright, the woman behind the blog Gimme Some Oven, had the delightful idea to make this summer classic a little more chic. We’re talking s’mores pops. That’s right, a charming twist on the traditional s’more, perfect for summer gatherings or a fun dessert for the kids. And with such a user-friendly recipe, these treats will have your guests begging for — ahem — s’more.
Classic treat: Strawberry shortcake
New twist: We know, baking a cake can be a daunting task, especially during the summer months when you would rather not turn the oven on. Well, we found the perfect way to obtain the traditional savory pound cake we love without having to bake an entire cake. These dainty strawberry shortcake cupcakes, by Sheryl at the Lady Behind the Curtain blog, have all the right ingredients to make this recipe a classic of its own. Need a cupcake pan? Classic treat: Orange creamsicle
New twist: No other flavor boasts the bright hues of the perfect summer day like orange creamsicle. And Lindsay Conchar, of Life, Love and Sugar, has injected this traditional taste into one of our favorite sugary snacks. We are smitten over her orange creamsicle puppy chow and can’t wait to get our paws all over it. We think this treat would be perfect for a pool-side snack or a picnic in the park. Speaking of which, we just love these picnic baskets from Bed, Bath & Beyond for just $29.99.
Classic treat: Root beer float
New twist: Cooling off with the iconic fizzy float? Can you say heaven? So, what could be better? Rootbeer float pops, that’s what. Melissa, of the blog Pink Pistachio, has given us the most scrumptious way to do it. In a few easy steps, this recipe will have you instantly satisfied. Need some popsicle molds? Amazon.com has this picture-perfect freezer pop maker for $21.91.
Classic treat: Jell-O molds

Classic treat: Ice cream
New twist: It seems like everywhere we look this season Greek yogurt is the hot topic in frozen treats. And this on-trend, healthier-than-ice cream, yogurt has us begging for more — especially with this recipe by Jaclyn Bell at Cooking Classy. With three ingredients, that’s right just three, you can easily and cheaply make your own fresh strawberry Greek frozen yogurt. Yummy!
