August Fashion Forecast: Summer leather, Issa London and Midi Skirts
Every August, our glossy fashion magazines arrive in the mail — complete with fall fashion spreads that tempt us. From leather jackets to cutesy cardigans and just-below-the-knee riding boots, fall always looks good.
But, the weather forecast is telling us: Stay in shorts. And stick to short-sleeved shirts. And, dangit, double up on deodorant — because it’s hot.
Cheers to August, and striking a happy balance that satiates our fashion cravings while keeping us comfy and cool on 90-degree days.
Here’s your fashion forecast for August:
Wear leather: But go sleeveless. One thing we’re loving this year is how leather decided it could be worn year-round. If you’re eager to wear the quintessential fall material — opt for a sleeveless leather dress, skirt or even shorts that are made for summer. Or, wear leather as an accent on a T-shirt or dress. This sleeveless Tinley Road leather peplum top in blue, black and tan is gorgeous. (Piperlime, $79). We also love this vegan leather cut-out skirt in coral made by Rhyme Los Angeles. (Piperlime, $69)
Rock a kimono: If you’re wishing you could layer up like it’s fall, might we suggest a lightweight kimono? We love the ethereal look they add to an outfit. This lightweight draped kimono would look perfect over a plain white T-shirt with jeans and some layered necklaces. (Forever 21, $22.80)
Celebrate ‘National Picnic Month’: Packing a picnic lunch and lounging in a park with a good book and a pretty dress is the perfect salute to summer. Wear gingham. Or a floral dress. Or, how about this Ralph Lauren handkerchief-hem jersey dress? (Macy’s, $159)
Give a midi skirt a try: Somewhere in between a mini skirt and a maxi dress lives the midi skirt. We saw them on the runways prior to the summer. If you’re unsure about them — try them with a tighter fitting, three-quarters sleeve shirts to strike a balance. The flare of this midi skirt from Asos ensures it’s flattering. (Asos, $30.55)
Get Kate Middleton’s style: Issa London — a fave designer of the Duchess of Cambridge — is debuting an affordable, limited-time line at Banana Republic on Aug. 8. Kate wore an iconic blue wrap dress for her engagement announcement, and it looks like the capsule collection will include a similar blue dress.
