How school uniforms can prevent bullying, save families money
School uniforms are making the grade, according to a new survey that shows wide-reaching impacts — including lower rates of bullying and higher rates of attendance.
The Lands’ End School Uniform survey questioned principals and other school leaders about formal dress code policies and school uniforms in public schools. The report found that school uniforms or dress-code policies are becoming more commonplace, with nearly half of the schools surveyed implementing the standards. That’s up from 21 percent in 2000.
While students may want to wear the latest trends so they can fit in or be part of the cool crowd at school, many families can’t afford buying top brands and trends for their kids. As a result, students get bullied or fall victim to peer pressure, according to report. Eighty-six percent of surveyed school leaders said that school uniforms and dress policies had a positive impact on peer pressure while 64 percent said it helped address school bullying.
Of the leaders surveyed who are at schools with uniform or formal dress code policies in place, 77 percent estimated the average cost of school uniforms per child, per year, was $150 or less.
