They’re back! Twinkies return to shelves on July 15
Could it be true? Just when we thought we might never taste that yellow cream-filled sponge cake again, our wishes have been granted: On July 15, Hostess will be re-releasing Twinkies to grocery and convenient stores across the nation.
Nine months ago, Hostess Brands Inc. – the maker of the beloved Twinkie – went bankrupt. The company then sold off its various brands to Metropoulos & Co. and Apollo Global Management for a reported $410 million.
The “new” Twinkies will have the same look and still be priced at $3.99 per box of 10 cakes. And, we think quite appropriately, the boxes will be adorned with the slogan “The Sweetest Comeback in the History of Ever.”
If you just can’t wait until July 15, Walmart has an early release set for July 14, stocking the cakes on the shelves at 3,000 of the retailer’s 4,000 U.S. stores. Customers also can expect other Hostess treats including Mini Muffins and fried Fruit Pies to appear by the end of next week.
So, go out and grab your tiny taste of yellow-cake happiness. But you may want to eat them sooner than later. As for the once “invincible” cake’s shelf-life, a spokesperson from Metroupoulos tells the Associated Press that, contrary to popular belief, the treat is not indestructible.
“Forty-five days — that’s it,” he tells the wire service. “They don’t last forever.”
In our house, we’re lucky if they last for five minutes.
