Beauty tips: How to keep your skin fresh when traveling
Dry, thin airplane air can spell big trouble for your skin. The trouble is, often when you’re flying, you have something special awaiting on the other end of the flight. It’s no fun stepping off the plane feeling like you need to walk through a decontamination tent and then start your morning makeup routine from scratch.
But with a little advance planning, you can get through the flight feeling and looking fresh. Here are our five favorite tricks to keeping your skin fresh when traveling.
Hydrate from the inside
The first step to having great skin is nourishing it with enough water. Traveling can dehydrate you, so skip the coffee and alcohol on your flight and instead request a bottled water. Yes, it’s no fun having to get up and use the restroom, but it’s actually beneficial to get your blood circulating, anyway. Drink plenty.
Pack a face mist
A few simple sprays of this face mist will revive your skin. The glycerin and panthenol refreshes, while caffeine, cucumber extract, green tea extract and chamomile will calm those pores. Of course, make sure you pack the travel size versions. Bobbi Brown face mist, $32, nordstrom.com
Refresh with wet wipes
Multiple times throughout the flight, wipe off your hands, arms, neck, behind your ears and, if needed, your face. We love mint-scented wipes for an added boost of freshness, although keep these out of your eyes or you’ll have another problem. You Smell wet wipes, $4.99, drugstore.com
Balm your lips
Keep your lips moist with mint-scented lip balm. This product will protect and soothe your lips, and not dry them out with weird preservatives, either. Bring minty dental floss and gum to finish the whole mouth. Instead of mouthwash, check out other Listerine products to spruce up your breath. You’ll feel better, and your fellow passengers will, too. Nivea A Kiss of Mint and Minerals lip care, $2.99, ulta.com
Delay your makeup application
If you’re headed somewhere special, try to put on as little makeup as possible when you leave the house in the morning. When you’re getting close to landing, clean your whole face with a wipe, and apply your makeup before you land. This allows a fresh application of makeup and prevents that caked-on, crusty-face feeling that comes along with sleeping in mascara and foundation. Beware of turbulence when you do that eyeliner!
