Best fashion trends that 2012 had to offer
By Brittany Anas
As we bid adieu to 2012, let’s salute some of the best fashion trends it brought us throughout the year. Hopefully, we’ll see some of these trends reincarnate themselves this spring and summer. Here’s our list — in no particular order — of what we were swooning over this year.
13. Mullet skirts:
It was like a party in the front and business in the back with these skirts. (So, perhaps that’s a reverse mullet). We loved high-low hemlines that had shorter cuts in the front allowing us to show a little leg mixed with longer, flowy material in the back that gave an elegant juxtaposition.
12. Velvet:
The luxe look of classic velvet reappeared in the fall in the form of dresses with deep V-necks and in jewel tones like emerald and ruby.
11. Chevron stripes:
This zig-zag twist on the classic stripe showed up on everything from rugs to purses to T-shirts to Easter eggs on Pinterest.
10. Darker hues of make-up:
This fall, burgundy lipstick gave us a grown-up, gothic-glam look.
9. Colorblocking:
This trend of wearing blocks of color has been going strong for several seasons. We love it because it’s bright and cheery and allows us to remix our outfits more than ever. And, it’s flattering. The rule of color-blocking: Mix, don’t match.
8. Pattern mixing:
Stripes with floral print? Don’t mind if we do. This year, we loved pairing prints in unexpected ways. It gave us that same liberating feeling as when we first began dressing ourselves.
7. Boots with low heels:
These boots are made for walking. Literally. From ankle booties to riding boots, the sophisticated no-heel or low-heel look blended style and comfort.
6. Ombre everything:
Our color-fading obsession started with ombre hairstyles that typically featured darker roots that lightened toward softer blondes at the tips. But, we also liked multi-colored gloves and fluorescent purses that took on the ombre effect. It kind of reminded us of Hypercolor T-shirts of the 1980s.
5. Colored denim:
Denim displays at stores this year looked like a rainbow. We loved showing off our legs in bright colors and pairing these jeans with chambray shirts, printed blouses and plain white T-shirts.
4. Printed pants:
Remember when the term “crazy pants” was an insult? That was so 2011. Now, crazy, printed pants — from floral to aztec to jacquard — gave us another fun way to wear pants.
3. Oxblood:
The color formerly known as burgundy came back this fall with richer brown undertones.
2. Infinity scarves:
These circle scarves looked adorable looped over T-shirts and gave great texture and dimension to our outfits.
1. Peplum:
Va-va-voom. Peplum has been accenting our curves with the flirtatious flared-out ruffle hitting at the hip.
