Best Halloween movies
By Andrew Koziara
Ah, October. Halloween season is finally here. The creative decorations are fun, and so is trolling around for candy way past the acceptable trick-or-treating age. And while scaring kids that migrate to your house can be fun, that’s not the best part of the season. The best part is the horror movies. Glorious, gory horror movies, from monster mashes to slasher films, to the ever-popular zombie flick can be enjoyed on the big screen or in the comfort of your own home.
The old fashioned way
Even though it’s a great deal more expensive, nothing really beats the classic movie-going experience. The huge screen, great sound system, sticky floors, and loud teens that snuck in from another movie can really be replicated anywhere else. Most studios try to cram their horror film releases into the month of October anyway, so right now you have a pretty good selection. But whether you witness the demented dealings of Silent Hill: Revelations or take part in the more personal and decidedly lower budget Paranormal Activity 4, Fandango is always there to keep things simple and cheap, minus the service charge.
Try before you buy
The fine art of movie rental has taken a backseat to streaming and to-your-door delivery, but a good old-fashioned movie rental is a great way to find cheesy horror schlock without paying too much. If you live in one of the few corners of the world that still has a Blockbuster, then you know what I mean. Though they don’t offer the streaming service of Netflix, they do have that same rental-by-mail service we all love, and lately the company has been pretty desperate for your dollars, so you know some deals will be waiting for you.
Bargain bins are always fun!
My favorite part about stores like Walmart and Target are the ridiculous bargain movie bins they have, even online. You can find movies for five dollars or even less in big bundles, and they often have a few cult classics on the racks. You always have the option to go with a newer movie for your Halloween viewing pleasure, but nothing beats a good marathon session of campy classics like Birdemic and Troll 2. These are the scariest movies around, in a completely ironic sort of way. It’s a great way to enjoy the season on the cheap!
