Best bets for Consumer Electronics Show gadgets
By Phil Hornshaw
This week is the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, which means that tech companies from around the world will be showing off their latest and greatest products to the press, public, and each other.
That’s good news on a number of fronts. First off, it’ll mean cool gadgets will debut all the time, showing the latest progression in things like smart TVs, in-car apps, tablets and smartphones. Second, it usually means sales and deals on older tech items, as well as chances to grab the latest gadgets as they hit shelves for the first time.
The next evolution of TVs
One of the big things that have been coming out during CES in the last few years are “smart TVs,” Internet-linked televisions that are influenced by mobile devices and tablets, as they can stream video from various services and use apps.
Expect to see cool new smart TVs from companies such as LG, Sony and Sharpe this year, some of which will support things like Android apps and games or Netflix streaming. You can grab sets like these from places such as Best Buy, where you’ll get 3 percent cash back and free shipping to Best Buy stores. A number of TVs are on sale during Best Buy’s year-end clearance event, too, for as much as 60 percent off. Another solid place for such TV sets is Walmart, which also offers 3 percent cash back and free shipping to stores.
Grab your (gaming) computer gear
Computer graphics card maker NVIDIA just had its CES press conference, in which it talked about its upcoming new computer components – a hallmark of CES, and a big deal especially for PC gamers. For PC users, graphics cards can really power up a machine, and getting those parts for a good deal is essential.
Among the best places to buy PC components are Amazon and Best Buy. Another great resource for deals on components is Newegg, which often has coupons for specific components ranging from keyboards to fans and hard drives. Nabbing the latest and greatest items can go a long way toward making your computer faster, more efficient, and more powerful, and CES is a great showcase for the newest and greatest of them.
There will undoubtedly be a whole lot of other things coming out of CES, like audio equipment, mobile devices, accessories and all sorts of technological goodies. The show runs Jan. 8-11 and will definitely be in the news all week, so keep an eye out for more great gadgets.
