Blame it on ‘Sharknado’ & Shark Week: Shark prints are trending this summer
We never thought we’d say it, but Jaws is pretty cute.
Whether it’s the cult popularity of Shark Week (which begins Sunday, Aug. 4!) or all of the publicity swimming around Sharknado, the made-for-television sci-fi movie that revived Tara Reid’s career (sorta?), we’re noticing shark prints cropping up all over this summer.
The Discovery Channel’s Shark Week first started in 1987, and is a week-long series that is all about sharks. (It was originally intended to raise awareness and respect for the creatures — and since it’s gained a huge following).
Here are some of our faves:
Swim trunks: Of course we first shopped swimwear, because shark prints are best for the beach (or pool for those who are landlocked). These boy’s swim trunks with mesh lining and a drawstring from Gap have an all-over shark print. (On sale for $17.99 + 4 percent Cash Back at Gap). Of course, it would go best paired with a gray towel with a “shark” hoodie — complete with a nice big shark-y smile. Also from Gap. And also on sale for $25.99.
Shark’s tooth necklace: Oh, the tales you could tell with this necklace. You wrestled a shark off the coast of La Jolla, Calif., and, as a sign of victory, stole a tooth? (By the way, there really are an increase in shark sightings near San Diego). Or, you could just say you got it from an adorable shop on Etsy. The real shark’s tooth is coated with gold on top and dangles from a chain. The JENNYandJUDE shop also sells necklaces with seahorses, stars, geodes and more.
“Shark bite” tank top: So, you the high-low hemline that’s been trending. We’ve also referred to it as a mullet hemline (party in the front, business in back). Add this to it’s nicknames: Shark bit hemline. And, we found a shark printed, semi-sheer tank top from Forever 21 with just that — a shark-bit hemline. We imagine wearing this with a skinny pair of black jeans. (Forever 21,
Guy’s shark T-shirt: This T-shirt is totally for the guy who clears out a week in August for Shark Week. With a shark’s jaw wide open, it’s for certain a statement T-shirt. We love that it’s made by the American brand “The Mountain,” which has an ethical edge. It’s T-shirts are hand-dyed and made with Earth-friendly processes. (Asos, $37.33 + 3.5 percent Cash Back).
