Celebrate National Blueberry Month with these delicious treats
How did we almost let National Blueberry Month slip away without celebrating? That’s right, the month of July honors blueberries — though the yummy berries also share the spotlight with “National Hot Dog Month” and “National Ice Cream Month.” Tough competition.
Blueberries win when it comes to nutrition, though. They’re packed with phytonutrients and can improve nighttime vision. Also, the USDA Human Research Center on Aging shows a diet rich in blueberries may improve motor skills and reverse short-term memory loss. Scientists have also found a compound in blueberries that could help reduce the risk of infection.
Summertime is a great time to find deals on blueberries. Not only are they at their peak quality, but you’ll also find them at their lowest prices. Want to celebrate even more? The blueberry industry keeps a list of all the blueberry festivals that are happening this summer and you can find “You-Pick-Em” spots to go pluck your own blueberries.
Here are four delicious blueberry dishes to celebrate the fruit– whether you bake with them, blend them or play bartender:
Blueberry Lemon Rolls: Melanie, a mother “of four very hungry children” and food blogger at A Beautiful Bite, came up with a delicious baked good recipe that uses blueberries and lemon zest for a seasonal twist on cinnamon rolls. Melanie says: “Blueberries and lemons are great dance partners. They just work so well together. And when you wrap them up in a slightly sweet and tender sweet roll dough, something magical happens.” Get the full recipe and directions here.
Blueberry Sorbet: Caroline, who runs a delicious blog called Chocolate and Carrots, says: “I love seeing people smile while they are eating a sweet treat that I have made.” Her blueberry sorbet recipe has us all smiling. For the sorbet recipe, she uses blueberries, a banana, maple syrup and pomegranate juice. Find the full recipe here.
Looking for a blender? The Magic Bullet Blender is on sale at Macy’s for $49.99 — plus you can get 5 percent Cash Back from ShopAtHome.com. Or, find a 72-ounce Ninja Professional Blender from Best Buy, where you can earn up to 2 percent Cash Back.
Blueberry Creme Smoothie: Judy, a retired mechanical engineer from New York, likes to bake at midnight. Hence the name of her lovely blog, The Midnight Baker, that she runs with a friend. She shared with us her creamy blueberry smoothie that she made with blueberries, Greek yogurt, milk and an optional sweetener. She garnished the smoothie with mint sprigs for a picture-perfect summer drink. Learn how to make the smoothie here.
Blueberry Margarita: Call it ‘adult dessert.’ Liz from Virtually Homemade has graced the Internet with a Blueberry Margarita so we can raise a glass and say cheers to National Blueberry Month. Yum! She says: “I know that there are so many good things in blueberries like anti-oxidants, vitamin c and potassium. So why not add a little health to a guilty pleasure? Mint and agave balance out this fruity margarita and make it a true summertime treat.” Check out the full recipe here.
