Clothes Call: What to wear on a trip to the pumpkin patch
Charlie Brown loved a yellow shirt with a black chevron stripe. But what’s your go-to outfit when it comes to your search for “The Great Pumpkin?” Before you hit the hay, start with a great outfit—one that’s equal parts comfy and cute, and that will look great in those Instagram photos you take at the pumpkin patch.
One caveat: When you’re picking out an outfit, steer clear of orange so that you don’t blend in when posing with your perfect pumpkin. Oh, and ditch your heeled boots for a pair of wellies and be ready for any kind of weather by dressing in layers.
Here are a few outfit ideas to make that pumpkin farm, corn maze or other outdoor fall outing your fashion runway.
Layer up: For a go-to, fall weekend uniform, start with jeans and a long-sleeve, lightweight T-shirt and layer on a puffer vest. We’re loving Gap’s PrimaLoft Luxe fur-trim puffer vest that will transition well into winter. If you’re bracing for a cool day, add in a cozy, plaid button-up and a pom beanie (and, of course, our favorite accessory: a pumpkin spice latte). And be sure to play with patterns, textures and colors. The bold, blue plaid shirt from Old Navy is perfect for mixing and matching.
Overalls: We know if Kris Kross was making you “jump, jump” in the early 1990s, you might be a little apprehensive about the overall comeback. This time around, though, the legs are slimmer or cuffed at the ankle and the shoulder straps are thinner for a look that’s laid back, but still stylish. A perfect pair? The Dollhouse juniors overalls from Macy’s. To avoid playing “who wore it better” with a scarecrow, make sure your overalls are in a darker denim, or even black, and that the legs are fitted, not baggy, and pair them with a soft, V-neck T-shirt, rather than a plaid button-up. Because of the slimmer fit of the leg, you also can layer on a looser-fitting utility jacket that cinches at the waist to strike the right balance. Outside of the pumpkin patch, remix your overalls with an unexpected pairing: A crisp, white oxford shirt and a colorful statement necklace.
Shoes: Unless your pumpkin search starts and ends at the big bin outside of the grocery store, you’re going to get dirty on your hunt. Leave your leather and suede at home, and throw on a pair of wellington boots over your denim. A good investment piece for fall? Hunter boots. The company has been around for 150 years and the next generation of their wellies at Madewell come with a flexible sole that they can be rolled up for easy packing.
