The best clothes for your workout
by Shelley Langenhorst
With New Year’s resolutions come millions of new gym memberships and plans to get in shape. What you wear at the gym will play a big part in how you feel. Don’t drown yourself in oversized sweats and a baggy T. This year, buy some new workout clothes that flatter your body and make you excited to hit the gym.
For the Runner
Breathable and comfortable clothes are key to enjoying your run. You don’t want anything that’s too tight or that doesn’t wick the sweat away from your body.
For winter running, follow the rule of 20 degrees: once you get going you will warm up to about 20-25 degrees more than the air temperature outside so don’t overdress. Think layers that you can easily take off if it gets too hot.
However, if you are running at night consider protective clothing that will keep you warm and safe from traffic. Check out this New Balance 360 Reflective Cold Weather Jacket that is as stylish as it is protective. Old Navy also has great deals on stylish and affordable workout clothes for your next run.
Nike and Famous Footwear have great selections for running footwear. However, if you will be logging serious miles it is advisable to get fitted in person at your local running store. They can find the shoe that’s right for your foot and stride and a proper fitting shoe can make all the difference as far as performance and recovery go.
For the Yogi
Nothing is more distracting during a soothing yoga class than clothes that ride up during down dog. For hot yoga and regular flows alike, check out these yoga shorts and yoga bras from Dick’s Sporting Goods.
Posing in a heated room is bound to work up quite a sweat so it is important keep your mat clean and bacteria free. The Skidless Towel from Athleta is a mat cover designed specifically for heated sessions. Machine washable, it will help to protect the mat from breakdown and bacteria caused by sweat.
For the Weight Lifter
They say no pain-no gain, but you can at least help soften the blow a little, right? Weight lifting gloves are a great choice to protect against blisters often caused by lifting heavy weights. Plus you will get bonus points for keeping hands off of potentially germy gym weights.
General workout clothes for any form of exercise are always a hit. Old Navy and Target have some of the most affordable and stylish workout clothes out there. If you’re willing to spend a little more, Under Armour carries a very high quality and long lasting brand of active gear.
