Coming-of-age in San Francisco with blogger MacKensie Gibson
MacKensie Gibson of One to Nothin’ just moved to San Francisco and hailed a cab for the first time in her life. Her blog is a coming-of-age story of a twenty-something, and MacKensie doesn’t disappoint. She shares her current favorite tunes, her out on the town stories with Rose (her split-personality counterpart) and her undying love for Shakira. We think we are going to get along just fine. Meet MacKensie …
Where I’m based: I just moved to the San Francisco Bay area from central Florida about three months ago.
How long I’ve been blogging: I’ve been blogging consistently for about two years, starting right after I graduated college and couldn’t find a job.
Blog/business basics: I consider One to Nothin a lifestyle blog because I don’t have any one focus. I write a lot about my never-ending quest to have Shakira’s bod through marathon training, strength training and all kinds of fun cleanses/fad diets. I also recap my adventures exploring this exciting new city and the strange experiences that go along with being a mid-twenties single lady in a far-from-home land trying to make friends and dodge sketchy dudes. You can also find new playlists and fashion posts pretty often.
Other blogs I love: There are so many blogs I love, but every day I check out these ladies: I Wore Yoga Pants to Work, Two Thirds Hazel, Adventures with Your Plucky Picaroon, Babbling Brookelyn, and Gin and Bare It. I love bloggers who can make me laugh on a daily basis.
Guilty pleasure: Sour cream and onion Pringles and all of Taylor Swift’s music.
Last thing I bought: Does food count? I spent a lot of money on delicious food this weekend. In Fisherman’s Warf I found an adorable food truck called The Codfather and I ate the most delicious fish tacos of my life.
Fav stores: Target is, of course, a magical place. I go there for clothes, cosmetics, groceries, jewelry, everything. But, lately I’ve been pretty pumped about going thrift shopping (Mackelmore style!). I hauled home a bunch of designer brand clothing from Plato’s Closet the other day and I got obnoxiously excited about it.
Tell us the story about why you named your blog “One to Nothin”… My family and I were on a road trip and we are all totally obsessed with music. The radio is always on in the car and there’s always some album playing at home, too. So on this particular trip my dad decided to turn the radio into a game where the first person to call the artist of the song playing “wins”. I put “wins” in quotations because as soon as you call the artist, you scream “ONE TO NOTHIN” at the top of your lungs regardless of how many points other participants have accumulated. This way the game never ends — I mean never. I play this game in restaurants, the gym, commercials on TV, you name it. My friends always have to be on guard.
What’s the best vacation you’ve ever been on? Last June my sister and I flew to Seattle so I could run the Rock ‘n Roll Half Marathon and it was amazing. Not only did we see three different live concerts throughout the week we were there, but it rarely even rained! The race course was gorgeous and there was even free beer at the end. We ate so much delicious food and just had a blast together.
What’s the best concert you’ve ever been to? This is a really hard question because I’ve seen a lot of great concerts in my day. I’d have to say the best one so far was a concert at the House of Blues in Orlando, Fla. I went to see the headliner, Motion City Soundtrack (they were so great — one of my favorite bands), but just by chance Fun. was opening for them. I didn’t know who Fun. was, but I loved the previous band Nate Reuss was in (The Format) so I recognized his voice and they were amazing live and I’ve been obsessed with them ever since (I’m seeing them for the fifth time next month!).
What is your favorite movie to quote? This is also a really hard one. Any Kevin Smith movie (especially Mall Rats), Anchorman, Mean Girls, Superbad. You can probably hear (or read) me quote any of these movies on any given day.
