Countdown: The best (and worst) fashion trends 2013 had to offer
By Brittany Anas
Some things remain the same every year: A kiss at midnight to bid the New Year goodbye, Anderson Cooper and Kathy Griffin hosting the countdown in Times Square and, perhaps, poppin’ a bottle of bubbles.
But as we bid farewell to 2013, here’s some fashion and beauty trends that made this year a little different. Some we want to salute — with hopes that they’ll stick around a little longer and last into 2014. And, well, others, we can’t wait to ditch and leave behind in 2013 and hope they don’t come back to haunt us in 10 years — when we spot them in our daughters’ closets.
Here’s a few trends to keep — and a few to ditch.
Keep: Bold black and white. Thank you, 2013, for gracing us with this classic color-combination that never fails to be chic. Whether it’s color-blocking a soft white blouse with a black leather mini or wearing a black blazer over a slouchy white T-shirt, the black-and-white combo was a no-brainer on those “I-don’t-have-anything-to-wear” mornings. We saw it emerge in spring, providing a stark contrast to the usual style suspects: pastels.
Our picks: The plus-sized color-blocked ponte dress with a V-neck from Target, where you’ll get 2 percent Cash Back from ShopAtHome.com. We’re also liking this watercolor-inspired black-and-white dress that has a marbled look.
Keep: Lace. This lady-like trend added a little pizzazz to everything from fit-and-flare dresses to detailing on blouses for a super-sweet, feminine look. Lace is a little bit sexy, but also channels some vintage charm.
Keep: Faux leather detailing. This trend is one that our fashion senses and budget could agree on. We’re loving subtle leather trims and detailing on skirts, sleeves, pockets, you name it. A little leather adds a tough finish to any outfit.
Our picks: A blue-and-black dress from Mossimo with faux leather discs on the cap sleeves. Also comes in burgundy and black, black on black or black and white. But the midnight blue-and-black color combo is one we’re crushing on this winter.
Ditch: Wedge sneakers. Sneakers should be comfy! They’re the reprieve our tootsies get from stilettos. ‘Nuff said.
Ditch: Mean girl T-shirts. Back in our day, these shirts would get us grounded. You know the ones — they say snippy little sayings like “Sorry I’m not sorry.” So brass!
Ditch: Pajama shirts in public. They had us worried for a quick minute. The pajama shirt was going public — with shirts even designed to look like they were slumber parties.
