How to create a home gym without breaking the bank
By Brittany Anas
Does the idea of a home gym conjure up images of the rich and famous? Maybe you’re thinking of the celebs you saw on MTV’s show Cribs who have infinity pools, full basketball courts with premium wood flooring and an enviable weight room?
You don’t have to break the bank to build a glorious home gym. With a few small purchases you can start building your own “home gym” — an exercise oasis where you can squeeze in some extra workouts or just enjoy some of your favorites. Go ahead and keep your gym membership, but consider making some investments that will make it easier for you to stick to your workout regimen and that you can do from home if, perhaps, there’s a snowstorm making the commute to the gym seem daunting.
Here are a few ideas for how to buff up your home — without breaking the bank.
- Install a basketball hoop: You may have already hit the gym for a morning run on the treadmill or pumped some iron. But consider how fun an after-dinner game of H-O-R-S-E or pick-up basketball with the family and neighbors can be? Check out these portable basketball hoops from Sears. (When you buy through ShopAtHome.com, you can get up to 7 percent Cash Back).
- Cardio equipment: Gyms are great for their diversity of machines and equipment. But, if you find yourself constantly waiting and eyeing cardio machines, it might be time to invest in one for your own home. If you had an elliptical in the garage or basement, think about how easy it would be to hop on it for 30 minutes in the morning before work? Find some ellipticals starting at just $200 at Sears.
- Go ‘old school’: The cheapest option? Take it back to the basics with some gritty gym essentials in your garage or basement that will make for a tough workout. We’re talking a chin-up bar, weighted jump rope, a mini trampoline for a low-impact firm-and-tone workout. Choose a splurge item — like an Everlast punching bag, which is on sale for $54.
