Beyond Disney World: Other great family amusement parks
By Aimee Heckel
Any 5-year-old will disagree with this, but Mickey Mouse is not, in fact, more crucial to human existence than the sun. And his Disney home is not the end-all of family-friendly amusement parks. There is a world of fun beyond the (often expensive) walls of the Magic Kingdom.
Here are some other family amusement parks worth visiting instead of Disney World. OK, maybe in addition to Disney World. We don’t want to cause any family riots or anything.
1. Legoland in Carlsbad, Calif. You’ve got to see this to believe it. We’re talking 4-D cinema experiences, more than 50 rides, mini cars, replicas of the Vegas Strip — all made out of Lego bricks.
On the east coast? There’s also a Legoland in Florida. In fact, it just opened a Legoland Water Park this month. Featuring a wave pool, slides, an interactive water-play structure and even a lazy river where you can build your own raft — this is like nowhere else on earth.

2. Sesame Place in Langhome, Penn. If there’s anything that can help you child get over the lack of Donald Duck, it’s Bird Bird. This theme park is based on the show “Sesame Street,” complete with rides, shows and furry friends.

3. Family Kingdom in Myrtle Beach. It’s got the “kingdom” in the name, right? This seaside amusement park is, of course, not as giant as the Disney galaxy, but it’s an alternative for a more low-key day of fun. The amusement park features more than 30 rides, including some oldie-and-goodies, like a wooden roller coaster.
Plan a multi-day excursion and hit up the water park, Splashes, across the street.
