eBay, Goodwill partner to help donors get paid in ‘Sell It Forward’
By Jay Keller
Through a pilot program called “Sell It Forward,” eBay encourages donors to mail gently-used items to Goodwill using a pre-paid, pre-addressed mailer that donors can drop off at the Post Office or UPS store.
Items are then sent to partner Goodwill outlets where representatives take over the eBay legwork and sell items like handbags, clothing and shoes through both auction and fixed-price formats.
The beta program, according to eBay, is designed for fashion items that are most likely to sell like clothing, shoes and handbags from recognized brands that are in “good, like-new or entirely-new condition.“
Goodwill says their qualified workers will use their experience selling items on eBay to inform their discretion when sorting and listing items to be sold in two weeks (or sooner) and for $10 or more.
Donors will then receive half of the proceeds from any items sold by Goodwill on eBay within a 14-day window via a PayPal transaction.
“We’ll sell what we can and deposit cash in your PayPal account,” Pay It Forward says. “The rest will go to the local Goodwill and you’ll get a tax receipt for your donation.”
Goodwill says donations will help people find meaningful, local jobs and contribute to the community.
Niether eBay or Goodwill have issued a formal announcement or statement regarding the nationwide launch of the program at this time but Pay It Forward is being advertised on Facebook and other local platforms.
According to the eBay website, items will be mailed to Goodwill of San Francisco, San Mateo and Marin counties.
eBay and Goodwill says that since the pilot program is newly-launched, space is limited at this time and hopes to expand the program based on local support and interest.
Currently, the partners are asking people to sign up online and they will receive a postage-paid donation bag in exchange for an email and mailing address.
eBay has prepared a substantial FAQ for customers that addresses account management, defines how PayPal works and other odds and ends.
Rules for donating items to Goodwill still apply and items in unusable condition due to tears, stains or strong odor will be donated directly instead of sold.
