Best educational gadgets that inspire fun learning
When you talk about educational gadgets, the initial impetus is to think they have to be stuffy and serious or overly bland for a kid to learn anything from them. But plenty of devices not only are great for boosting brain power, but are lots of fun at the same time.
ThinkGeek always has interesting left-field items, including cool educational gadgets. While you might argue that Tetris isn’t educational, I’d disagree — it’s really a pretty good way for kids to dip their feet into time sensitive problem solving. ThinkGeek’s Tetris lamp, which lights up when the blocks are stacked and turns off when they’re pulled apart, is exactly the kind of fun moment that teaches without being overly preachy.
For something more clearly educational, there’s the SkyScout Personal Planetarium. Point it at the night sky and this handy device shows you all sorts of information including 6,000 stars, planets and constellations. It’s a gadget I wish I had access to as a kid, and any would-be astronomy geek should get a big kick out of it. You can grab it from Amazon.
Finally, there’s the kid-tablet. While every kid wants an iPad, that’s a pretty big chunk of change for something easily broken or lost. Polaroid makes a 7-inch tablet specifically for kids complete with parental controls, plus creative, educational games. You can grab the Kids Tablet from Polaroid directly or pick it up at Kohl’s, Toys’R’Us or Walmart.
The bottom line is gadgets used for educational purposes don’t have to be dull or childish. There are all sorts of cool tech innovations that help kids learn, too. You just have to know where to look.
