How to exercise while traveling
by Shelley Langenhorst
It’s the holiday season as well as the season of travel. More Americans will hop on planes, trains, and automobiles this month than any other time of the year. In all the hustle and bustle of traveling and seeing family, healthy habits can easily slip.
Instead of letting a vacation derail your healthy lifestyle efforts, use these simple tips to keeping up your exercise routine while on the road. Your body and mind will thank you for it.
Bring a DVD
Bring a few your favorite fitness DVDs with you. They are compact and won’t take up much space in your suitcase. Make sure it’s a workout that doesn’t require any special equipment. As long as you can find a DVD player and an open space, you won’t have an excuse not to work out.
Download free workouts from your laptop
If you forget your DVD, just head on over to YouTube for an endless selection of free workout videos that you can do. Consider yoga, pilates, or even a Tabata workout. Don’t worry if it’s not as hard as your normal workout, just focus on anything that will get your body moving and your heart rate up.
Enlist friends or family for a walk after dinner
Make sure those around you take part in the healthy fun. Go for a morning or post-dinner walk to get some exercise and spend some quality time with family and friends. Healthy habits really are contagious so by setting a good example you will be inspiring those around you to follow suit.
Running is a fun and active way to sightsee and can be done anywhere for free. Lace up your sneakers and hit a local trail or tourist area for a workout that is efficient and enjoyable. Running also lets you have a bit of alone time to decompress from the stress of traveling.
If you are running in a new area, take extra precaution and ditch the headphones so you can be aware of your surroundings.
No equipment exercises
Remember, there are a host of no equipment needed moves that you can do for a great full body workout. Lunges, pushups, and crunches are a few of many that can make up a challenging and muscle building workout on the go. Check out this article for more tips and ideas.
