Expert tips on transitioning to a cold-weather exercise routine
It’s easier to stay active when the weather is nice. Simply go for a walk or jog outside. Walk the dog. Head out on a hike or bike ride.
But when the weather traps you indoors, it’s easy to let your routines slide—and lose fitness ground, right in time for the culinary pressures and stress of the holidays.
Instead, plan ahead so you can wrap up this year on a high note.
Here are some expert tips on transitioning to a cold-weather exercise routine, courtesy of one of our favorite group exercise options, Pure Barre. These tips came from Pure Barre in Boulder, Colo.:
1. Find a workout that you will love all year, so it doesn’t feel like you have to start a new program every time the weather changes. An indoor class, like Pure Barre, is a great complement to all kinds of outdoor fitness activities and keeps you working hard all year round. 2. Find a workout that is constantly changing, so you don’t get bored and antsy. That’s one of the appeals of exercising outside: The scenery is always different and there are things and people to distract you. Look for indoor options that are also always changing, Pure Barre says, such as classes that use different equipment, do different moves and have different teachers—without sacrificing quality.
3. Use indoor training to prepare you for winter outdoor sports. Get outside in the winter, too. Cross-train indoors to make skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing and ice skating safer and easier on your body. Look for non-impact, strength-training classes that build core strength, flexibility and balance, Pure Barre recommends.
4. Set an achievable goal this winter. Pure Barre urges students to sign up for classes in advance; once your name is on the schedule and it’s in your calendar, you are much more likely to follow through and not back out.
5. Find a workout community. Friends and a healthy community hold you accountable. They notice when you are missing from class. They can encourage you when things get touch. Surround yourself with people who motivate you.
6. Reward yourself. It can be easy to overeat and gain weight in the winter, because you are bundled up under layers and might not notice the changes in your body right away. Save unhealthy sweets for special occasions. Reward yourself with a pumpkin spice latte, after a week of healthy eating habits all week. A healthy lifestyle is about balance, moderation, motivation, and most of all, loving yourself enough to give yourself a pat on the back every once in a while.
