Fall 2013 fashion preview: Plaid, ‘coatigans’ and drop waists
By Brittany Anas
When extra-thick Vogue and InStyle magazines arrive in the mailbox in mid-August, it’s like the starting gates of fall fashion have opened. In front of us are leather buckled boots, the return of sweaters, leather jackets and — we didn’t forget — seasonal pumpkin beer.
Last fall, trends went over-the-top: Loud, bright geometric prints on pants and bold graphic prints on sweaters. This autumn, fashion is going “back to basics” with classic prints (think plaids and houndstooth) and with smaller, more dainty jewelry that gives our wrists a break from all of the arm parties and softens up the neckline from heavier bauble necklaces.

Plaid, please: After a season of bold vertical stripes, bright pops of neon and graphic florals, we’re welcoming the return of classic and preppy plaids. A pair of plaid trousers nipped near the ankle from ASOS eludes a refined look and comes in a fall palette of navy, rust and cream. For an instant outfit, pair with a crisp white oxford shirt and a pair of nude pumps. If you’re more daring, pop over the coordinating plaid blazer. (Pants, $67.50)
Autumn emerald: Is it a coat? Is it a cardigan? It’s a coatigan. A cross between outerwear and a sweater, ASOS has invented a double-breasted chunky knit sweater that hits mid-thigh. It’s made cozy with mohair and has hip-level pockets. We’ve watched the color emerald transition through all seasons as it’s enjoying its time as color of the year. This fall, we’re seeing it’s more earthy side. While Pantone is due to announce a new “color of the year” in December, we suspect we’ll see emerald stick around for a bit because it works with all skin tones. (Sweater, $84)
Peplum’s next trick: Peplum has been going strong and it looks like the feminine silhouette will hang in there for at least another season. But, we’re seeing the mini skirts move further down and the trend evolve into “drop waist” pleated skirts. This trend is perfect for boyish figures who want to add some insta-curves. ASOS has a petite structured drop-waist dress in burgundy. (Drop-waist dress, $93)
