Great in-VEST-ment: 4 vests to keep you warm and in style this fall
If you’re looking for an easy way to update your winter wardrobe in 2014 and help transition some of your more versatile spring pieces along the way, a vest is an easy solution. Here are four styles to add to your wardrobe this season—each a great, ahem, in-vest-ment for a different reason.
Warm and fancy
Faux fur continues to be a foxy and functional trend for fall/winter 2014. A faux fur vest, like this white vest from Forever 21, $34.90, is a cozy way to warm up (and spice up) even a simple jeans-and-tee combo. Or throw a faux fuzzy style over a dress to add seasonal texture. Or pair it with a flannel or plaid button-up and fleece-lined leggings. For a new spin on an oldie, try this longer, ’70s-influenced faux fur vest, also at Forever 21, $42.80. It’s not often that something this fashionable is also comfortable—and so wardrobe flexible.
The denim vest has returned this fall—yes, again—with a wild child vengeance. Layer up with distressed and printed vests, preferably in a lighter denim, for ultra throw-back appeal. Plus, modern, thinner denim is much more comfortable than its medium-shade, outdated denim cousins of yesteryear. Denim vests are casual and cool—and hard to do wrong, no matter your style or age. Throw one on top of a long, floral-print dress, or with your favorite sweatshirt and skinnies. Warning: Let’s not pair the denim top with a denim bottom, mmmk? That’s called a “Texas Tuxedo,” and it’s best worn with a mullet. Or better yet, not at all. You can’t go wrong with this light-colored denim vest at Forever 21, $49.90.
Angled and interesting
Want to try something new? We’re loving the moto vest this season. It’s an armless twist on the classic motorcycle jacket that will somehow never stop being sexy, with its angled zippers and funky, flop-over collar. This soft, light blue version at Forever 21, $32.90, takes a traditionally hardcore, masculine cut and softens it up with a poly-rayon blend. Wear it with your faux leather leggings or pants to complete the look, 2014-style.
Sporty and stylish
Sporty doesn’t always go hand-in-hand with stylish, but there’s a new crop of men’s outdoorsy vests that encompass both. Instead of the typical puffy, brightly colored, athletic vest splattered with a company logo, look for sexy, thinner versions in hip colors, like this duo-gray hoodie-style vest at H&M, $24.95. Pair it with jeans and a long-sleeved tee this winter. to update last fall’s wardrobe for cheap, and look trendy without looking over the top. And, gals, feel free to “borrow” this look often.
