Fashion forecast for spring 2013
The good news: Spring 2013 will bring us playful peek-a-boo cutouts, tuxedo jackets that Yves Saint Laurent would be proud to see us wearing and bold, thick stripes.
The bad news: Blue eyeshadow is rumored to be coming into style. (We’ll try to be cautiously optimistic — just like when coral-colored lipstick flirted with us). We are also unsure of the knee-high gladiator sandals that could be forthcoming.
Before some of us last-minute gift shoppers have even checked off everyone on our list, retailers are already rolling out some early spring looks. Some of them will look familiar, like high-low skirts and dresses. Patterned pants are going even more bold with bright floral prints instead of the more muted pastels we saw last spring. And, there will be some unfamiliar looks — like loose-fitting Bermuda shorts. We’re especially craving elaborate beads on apparel and the sophisticated and sexy blazer-and-short suits that the runways have promised us.
Here’s what Spring 2013 has in store for us:
Bright pumps and low-heels:
As we transition from winter to spring, we appreciate the little kitten pumps that are like training heels to get our feet re-adjusted to walking in heels. We can expect to see bright pops of color on shoe racks — like these blue (faux) suede shoes from H&M for $24.95. They also come in a hot pink patent leather.
Bold stripes:
Stripes this spring will get thicker and bolder, replacing the subtle, Breton stripes we saw last year. (Think: McDonald’s Hamburglar. Seriously). Here’s a thick striped bodycon dress from Forever 21 for $12.5o that, yes, comes in black-and-white, but also blue and cream if you don’t want to look like a fast-food chain mascot.
Exaggerated ruffles:
Prepare for the ruffle takeover. Ruffles will go all-out frilly and girly this spring, giving a flamenco-West Side story vibe. Anthropologie is on top of the trend and has some adorable dresses and skirts that have just arrived, like this Carmen Ruffle skirt that is an online exclusive for $198 and this sherbet Lilian Halter ruffle dress for $298.
Black and white:
Expecting pastels? Stark black and white contrasts will also show up in spring 2013 collections for a sophisticated, polished look. Here’s early inspiration from White House Black Market: A ruffle flounce knit dress for $110 or this immaculately structured knit jacket for $138. Both make for ideal transition pieces between seasons.
Peek-a-boo cuts:
Skin will be in with geometric cuts that play peek-a-boo on our bodies. After the holidays, you might want to start a massive crunch regime because the peek-a-boo cuts that we’ve been seeing in seasons past are making their way to our tummies. Not cool, fashion gods. Not cool.
Baggy Bermuda shorts:
Bermuda shorts that extend to our knees have been tailored in the past, giving us a sexy-surfer look. This spring, they’ll be even looser, giving us a relaxed vacation vibe.
