Fashionable flight attendants? Banana Republic is on board
By Brittany Anas
You’ve probably never thought of that narrow aisle on your airplane as the runway or the structured navy-and-blue uniforms as being “fashion forward.”
Did you know that Banana Republic and Virgin America have a partnership, with the retailer designing chic uniforms for the airline’s 2,000 flight crew staff members? If you’re traveling this season — and happen to be flying with Virgin America — go ahead and take note of the pretty silk print scarves, pencil skirts and bright trenches donned by your flight crews. Men crew members are wearing leather jackets and dapper striped-sleeve sweaters. Designers were inspired by the hit Bravo show “Project Runway” and held a friendly competition to come up with uniforms to be worn in the friendly skies.
For the designs, Banana Republic tried to recapture some of the romance of 1960’s jet-setting — while adding comfort and modern flair.
More recently, Banana Republic provided the tailored slim suits to outfit the “rapping robots” for Virgin America’s newly released in-flight safety video. It’s a fun song-and-dance number that makes you want to pay attention to the seatbelt instructions. Who knew you could make safety information sound so cool? And that armrest and life vest would be rhymed in a rap song? The video has been viewed roughly 7.5 million times on YouTube and features American Idol and So You Think You Can Dance alumni.
