Free cone day: Ben & Jerry’s celebrates 34 years with ‘thanks’ to fans
By Jay Keller
Get ready to scream for some ice cream – Ben & Jerry’s is giving away free cones next Tuesday, April 9, at all scoop shops worldwide.
Since its first anniversary in 1979, Ben & Jerry’s has said “thanks” to fans with free ice cream for their continued support throughout the years.
“It’s free, it’s fair, it’s everywhere, and it is one of the most exciting days at Ben & Jerry’s,” said Chief Marketing Officer Dave Stever said Tuesday in a statement. “We’re always striving to show our fans that we love them more than they love us.”
Ben & Jerry’s produces and supplies a variety of super-premium ice cream and has recently taken steps towards ensuring their ingredients a Fairtrade Certified by the end of 2013.
Known for its activism, Ben & Jerry’s says Fairtrade aligns with part of their mission which encourages “promoting business practices that respect the Earth and the Environment.”
The company is also proud of being an organic supplier that uses high-quality ingredients including milk and cream from family farmers who do not treat their cows with the synthetic hormone rBGH.
“If a delicious, euphoric scoop isn’t enough reason to stop by the shop, you can feel good that the ice cream you’re enjoying on Free Cone Day is doing good,” Ben & Jerry’s said in the statement.
More people will be enjoying Ben & Jerry’s Free Cone Day this year than ever before as the company expects to give out more than one million cones at scoop shops nationwide and at select stores in Europe and Asia.
On April 9, the company hopes to tempt fans with two new flavors: Liz Lemon or Candy Bar Pie.
Liz Lemon, possibly inspired by a main character on the TV show “30 Rock,” is part of a popular trend in ice cream that’s includes products made using Greek frozen yogurt instead of traditional ingredients
To celebrate the 34th annual free cone day, Ben & Jerry’s also built a “ matchmaking thingamabob ” to help fans connect with friends on Facebook for more freebies and “cone together.”
Ben & Jerry’ says that promotional efforts will vary at a local level, so make sure to check out specifics using the scoop-shop locator before April 9.
