Gear your dog needs when exercising with you
By Brittany Anas
Your dog is not just your best friend. He’s also a great work-out buddy. If you jog, hike, or, heck, doggy paddle in the lake with your pup, make sure that he’s got appropriate work-out gear. Nope, you don’t need to get him his own iPod (though we suspect he’d jam out to Baha Men’s Who Let the Dogs Out on repeat). But you need to uphold your duties as a responsible guardian and make sure your dog is safe, comfortable and hydrated.
Here’s some of our favorite, must-have work-out gear for your four-legged friend:
- Ruff Wear Singletrack Hydration dog pack: The pack is ideal if you hike or walk trails with your dog because it stashes water packs and a collapsible bowl for your dog. The light, breathable material keeps your dog cool and comfy. You can also store pick-up bags in the pouches. (REI, $90)
- Dog boots: Booties will protect your dog’s little paws from sharp rocks, thorns, broken glass, hot sand, ice or any other natural elements that could be uncomfortable for him. The soles of these boots are made with recycled tire rubber and nylon and will give you pet good traction. (REI, $50)
- Outward Hound Petsaver lifejacket: It’s a bit of a misconception that all dogs know how to swim. Even though the doggy paddle is named after them, some dogs don’t enjoy being in the water, some can tire out quickly and others with low body fat have a tough time staying afloat. If you go boating with your dog on board or are spending a day at the lake, it’s a good idea to keep your dog safe in a life jacket. They’re cheap. (PetSmart, $12.07)
- Collapsible water bowl: Always make sure your dog is hydrated. Instead of carrying a cumbersome bowl, pack a collapsible one for your dog. (Petco, $7.99)
