Holiday gift guide: How to pick perfect perfumes and fragrances
Your mission, should you choose to accept it, holiday gifter, is to conduct a little recognizance work on your recipient. Perfumes and colognes are great for gifting, but are surely a personal gift and depend on preference—thus requiring research on your part.
Mom, for example, may love a sandalwood undertone, but your BFF favors more of a freesia top note. Your little bro? You’ve finally convinced him there are finer fragrances than that body spray he’s been dousing himself in since middle school.
To uncover their scent preferences, casually ask your intended recipients what they are wearing the next time you see them. If you’re buying for somebody in your household, see what bottles they’re running low on.
Here are some fragrance trends and shopping tips to help you pick out scents they’ll love this holiday season:
If you’re shopping for somebody who has yet to adopt a “signature scent,” perfume samplers are the perfect gift. For $60 each, the Sephora Perfume Sampler and Sephora Cologne Sampler sets each include 14 samples of the store’s most sought-after fragrances, which come in .03 to .06-ounce tubes. The best part? They come with a voucher so the recipient can choose a favorite, take the included “scent certificate into Sephora” and redeem for a full-size bottle at no extra cost. The perfume sampler includes best-sellers like Burberry Brit Sheer Spray; both the Elizabeth and James Nirvana Black Spray and White Spray; Gucci Flora; Marc Jacobs Daisy spray and more. The cologne sampler includes faves like Burberry Brit Rhythm for Men; Jean Paul Gaultier “Le Male” spray; Giorgio Armani Acqua Di Gio spray; Gucci Made to Measure spray; Ralph Lauren Polo Red; Yves Saint Laurent L’homme spray and more.
Sephora is making it much easier to find fragrance picks for everybody on your shopping list with an easy to shop “scent guide” that is broken down into four categories: “floral,” “fresh,” “warm and spicy” and “earthy and woody.” The guide includes accompanying picks for the different scent families. For example, Viktor and Wolf Flower Bomb, $115, is a sure pick for those who love “classic florals” that are glamorous and romantic. Marc Jacobs Daisy, $76, is a best bet for those drawn to sheer, airy, uplifting “fresh florals.” For men, Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue, $72, is a great pick for those who prefer zesty and energetic fruits and citrus scents and Polo Blue, $63, is perfect for a guy who likes crisp, earthy, herb-like scents.
