4 tips for a better online dating profile picture
By Brittany Anas
We all know first impressions are important. So, how do you make a smashing one in an online dating profile? Here’s a few things we do know: A selfie taken in a bathroom mirror or the infamous duckface might bring all the wrong suitors your way. And, step away from the Photoshop because, well, honesty is the best policy, right?
With Valentine’s Day around the corner, traffic to dating websites starts to ramp up.
Here’s a few tips to help you look your best in a profile picture.
- Don’t take the photo yourself: While “selfie” may have been Oxford Dictionary’s word of the year, take the time to take a quality photo. Or, consider hiring a photographer. Check out Groupon coupons in your area for photographers who are offering specials now that the holiday season has slowed down. (Get 4 percent Cash Back on your Groupon purchase when you shop with ShopAtHome.com).
- Get lighting on your side: Professional photographers love to shoot portraits during the golden hour, which is about one hour prior to sunset, because that’s when natural lighting looks soft on the skin. Shooting photos when it’s bright out can cast harsh shadows. And of course you don’t want the “demon-esque” red eye that comes with a camera flash.
- Be realistic: Don’t even think about putting up a photo from college if you remember dancing at parties to mix tapes or mixed CD’s instead of iPod shuffled lists. You aren’t fooling anyone with outdated photos. (Ahem, especially if you scanned a printed photo that has the date in the bottom right corner). And, step away from Photoshop. Remember, confidence is a good trait. Instead of altering your photos, stand in figure flattering photos — for example, good posture and extending your neck out a tad can have a slimming effect.
- Soft make-up: Wearing too much makeup in a profile picture can look like you’re trying to hide something. Go with a soft palette, which tends to translate best in photos. For a glowing collection and picture-perfect skin, we love the Argan Matchmaker Complexion kit. (What an appropriate name!) The set is includes good-for-your-skin Argan Oil, a powder foundation and a liquid serum — both of which go on white, then instantly adjust to match your complexion. Plus, there’s a cheek color made from coconut water that lasts up to 14 hours. Earn up to 5 percent Cash Back on your Sephora purchases when you buy through ShopAtHome.com.
