Selective Potential: Fashion, lighthouses and daily adventures
Tieka Knight is a true talent. She is the brains behind Selective Potential, a lifestyle blog showcasing Tieka’s cool life. Her photos, graphic design, outfits and lighthouse obsession are endearing. Oh, and did we mention she even rides a mint-green scooter? Meet Tieka …
Where I’m based: Grand Rapids, Mich.
How long I’ve been blogging: It’ll be four years in September — whoa!
Blog/business basics: Selective Potential is a personal style blog based in Michigan. I love to write about my outfits, my adventures and travels around the state of Michigan, and my life in general. I consider it somewhat of a personal diary!
What does “Selective Potential” mean? I honestly didn’t have a huge thought behind it when I came up with it. I wanted something I could grow with, whether my blog was about style, travel, life or maybe include a family someday! I believe that everyone has potential and is able to select it and/or live up to it.
What do you enjoy most about blogging? The friendships and relationships I’ve made. Plus, I can’t complain about the amazing opportunities it has brought me. But I now have friends all over the country that I wouldn’t have, if I didn’t blog. It’s been an amazing experience and I wouldn’t trade it for the world.
Guilty pleasure: Movie theater (overly buttered) popcorn.
Last thing I bought: I just treated myself to a soy chai latte as I’m catching up on emails, but as for clothes? An adorable floral romper that I can’t wait to wear to Austin, Texas in a month!
Where did you develop your passion for graphic design? I was just out of high school and had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. I kept thinking of the things I liked to do in my spare time – redesign my MySpace profile and work on photos in Photoshop — graphic design/art college just seemed like the right fit. I absolutely love what I do!
You have kind of a vintage vibe going on both in your design work and your style, what inspires that? When I first started blogging, I fell very much in love with ModCloth — who features vintage style clothes and home decor items. And then through reading other blogs, I always gravitated to the girls who wore more feminine, vintage-styles and I started wearing those things myself. It’s kind of an unexpected love affair!
So you seem to have a cool fascination with lighthouses, tell us about that? I live in Michigan, and we have more lighthouses than any other state in the country. I grew up in a town that had two, and lived in another town with a very beautiful lighthouse. I started traveling to them basically for cool photo “backdrops” but quickly fell more in love with them as I continued blogging. It’s my lifelong goal to see every one of them!
