5 ways to make your home the best haunted house in the neighborhood
By Aimee Heckel
Some families have Christmas or Thanksgiving traditions. Others make family rituals out of Halloween.
In fact, the National Retail Federation expects Halloween spending this year to reach $6.9 billion. However, the 158 million Americans who plan on celebrating Halloween this year are hoping to trim their spooky spending.
Here are a few ways to make your home the best haunted house in the neighborhood, but without terrifying your bank account.
1. Go big; go metallic.
Shiny, metallic decor is dramatic, a bit steampunk, classy, totally unique and reflects light to maximize impact. A metal pumpkin ($23.99 at Kohls.com) accented by glowing LED candles ($7.49 each for a Halloween-theme candle at Kohls) on your porch, mantel or front windowsill will make a huge statement. After all, lighting is the most important mood-setter.
2. DIY project with your kids: Make your own metallic pumpkin.
FabSugar has a great tutorial on how to make a metallic studded pumpkin. An easy solution involves metallic spray paint (and cautious parental guidance).
3. Get creative and involve your kids.
Browse the Halloween decor page for Kohls.com and let each kid decorate a window. Save money by using Kohls coupons and pairing them with Cash Back from ShopAtHome.com. If you spend more than $75 at Kohls.com, you get free shipping.

4. Decorate for all five senses.
Don’t limit your decorations to the eyes. Indulge in pumpkin-scented candles or candy-apple-scented candles (up high where the kids can’t reach them, of course). Play loud symphony music. Set up some standing fans near the front door to blow a chilly breeze on trick-or-treaters. Adorn your couch or porch chairs with Halloween pillows, like this smooth sequin spiderweb pillow ($17.49).
5. Add something just for the kids.
Replace your kids’ regular night lights with a Halloween cat night light ($9.99). Place a funny zombie statue on their bookshelf. Just for Halloween day, let them eat their breakfast cereal out of a Halloween candy bowl. Sometimes it’s the little things that can make you look like supermom — without even having to dress up.
