Hot toys for the holidays
As the holiday season approaches, parents everywhere now have something new to worry about: finding the perfect toy to put under the tree.
Don’t head into the holiday season unprepared. Stores like Target, Kmart, Sears, Disney Store and Toys R Us have already put out their lists of this year’s most popular toys. That’s a lot of toys to sort through, but there are a few that stand out from the crowd.
Top toys of 2012
Furby is back! And it’s on everyone’s must-have list for the holidays. This talking ball of fuzz comes in a dizzying variety of colors, though some colors are available only at certain stores. The more you play with a Furby, the more you shape its personality. Get the app to virtually feed it (Hint: avoid the hot peppers), interact with it and translate its Furbish babble.
• Lalaloopsy Silly Hair
This is another top toy that practically everyone agrees on. Kids love the colorful characters, bright accessories, and especially the bendable hair that can be curled, twisted and straightened.
Barbie is a perennial favorite, of course. But this year, where you buy your Barbie determines what kind you can get. Kmart has the exclusive Barbie Holiday 2012 Brunette Doll in a red holiday gown. But Target has the brand new Barbie Photo Fashion Doll, with a built-in camera that displays photos on Barbie’s t-shirt.
• LeapFrog LeapPad2 Explorer
Barbie isn’t the only toy sporting a camera this year, either. The new LeapPad2 has a new feature: front-and-back cameras. Children can create, edit and even narrate their own stories.
• Air Hogs Hover Assault
It drives. It flies. It’s radio-controlled. And it shoots plastic missiles. What more could you ask for?
• Imaginext Castle
This one is on almost every top toy list. The Imaginext Castle comes with an assortment of fighting figures that also activate its features: locking the gate, barricading the windows and firing at the enemy.
• Monster High
Like Barbie, Monster High is a hot toy where your choices depend on where you buy it. Target has the Scarily Ever After Collection. Meanwhile, Kmart has the exclusive Monster High Roller Maze Gift Set. Choose wisely.
Special holiday toy deals: free shipping and reservations
To avoid the last-minute outage of a favorite toy, Toys R Us is launching a brand new program called Hot Toy Reservation. If you put down a 20% deposit before Halloween, you’re guaranteed to get your toy by December 16. Unfortunately, this program is available in-store only, not online. (Not yet, anyway.)
But the best deal is probably from Target: free shipping on their entire list of top toys. No minimum order. Plus, you can earn Cash Back from ShopAtHome.com. And that makes for happy holidays!
