How to eat healthy on a budget
No matter what your grocery budget, nobody likes to waste money on food. Contrary to popular belief, eating healthy does not have to break the bank. Follow these simple rules to start saving today.
Buy in bulk
And not just the 10lbs of Halloween candy on special at Costco. Dried beans and legumes, grains, nuts, seeds, and dried fruits are all great items to buy in bulk. Buying dried beans instead of canned can save you serious cash, especially if they are a staple in your diet.
Whole grains are also cheaper when purchased in bulk. Just don’t forget to label them so that you aren’t confused later.
Nuts and seeds (usually raw and unsalted) are another item that is much cheaper from bulk bins than they are from the fancy designer cans at most stores. Remember, nuts and seeds are often best stored in the freezer (especially if they are roasted).
Sure, buying in bulk may cost you a little more at first, but you will save on future grocery visits.
Buy it whole
Consumers pay a hefty premium on already-prepped fruits and vegetables. Instead of purchasing pre-mixed bag salads, baby carrots, or tiny packages of herbs, buy the whole product.
Buy whole heads of romaine and bunches of spinach. Buy a large bag of carrots and peel and chop them yourself. Buy large bunches of herbs to get more for your money.
Sure, it requires a little extra prep time to wash and chop veggies, but you will save money in the process.
Meal planning goes hand-in-hand with checking for the best sales. Sit down on Sundays with the sale flyers for the week and plan out your meals accordingly, while trying to overlap ingredients as much as possible. Make those ingredients work double duty.
For example, use greens for salads and smoothies or use quinoa for breakfast and dinner. If you are going to be shelling out big bucks on fresh produce, make the most of what you have and use it all up. Also, try to plan meals around staples you might already have in your fridge or pantry.
