How to stay sane during the holidays
Stress management is important year round, but as the holidays approach, feelings of stress and being overwhelmed can derail us and have us feeling too frazzled to enjoy ourselves.
Check out these four tips for managing stress in healthy and positive ways. You will feel more relaxed in no time.
Exercise is a wonderful stress reliever. You can get the physical release of pushing yourself, or simply set aside a time to zone out and not think at all. Treadmills are great for this! Check out more surprising benefits of exercise.
Sometimes in the hustle and bustle of the holidays, slowing down and savoring a moment of silence can do wonders. Meditation is a fantastic way to start your day and go into it with mindfulness and peace.
There’s no need to make meditation more complicated than it is: simply sit down and calm your mind of thoughts as best you can. You can even pick a mantra to repeat over and over. Think “I am calm”, “I am happy” or “I am blessed”. You will be Zen before you know it.
It’s tempting to get caught up in our holiday to do lists: bake cookies for the work party, go shopping, wrap presents, and pick up Aunt Rita from the airport.
This Christmas, consider making a gratitude list as well. Focus on everything that you are grateful for and watch your stress melt away. It can be something as simple as being grateful for short lines at the store. Or it can be something more encompassing, like being grateful for family and friends.
Studies have shown that being outside can automatically calm the nerves. You get even more of those mood boosting hormones if you are spending time near a body of water.
Take a moment out of your day to go outside for fresh air and sunshine. The vitamin D we get on a sunny day also helps to enhance our overall mood, especially for those suffering from Seasonal Affective Disorder. A brisk 10-minute walk in the sunshine will have you feeling happy and grounded. Just make sure to practice safe sun.
