How to wear denim jackets this season
It seems denim will never go out of style, and jean jackets seem to pop back up every summer, in lieu of a puffy winter coat.
But while denim as a fabric is timeless, the expressions of it vary wildly from year to year. Sometimes it’s dark denim, distressed, light, tight, thin, embellished, stonewashed, you name it. Every year seems to have its own interpretation of how to wear this classic material.
That means even though denim jackets are “in” for the summer of 2015, that “cool” jean jacket you held onto since 1999 may not exactly be your best choice. Or even that distressed, bedazzled jean vest that you picked up in Vegas a few summers ago may be ready to retire.
Here’s how denim jackets look like this season:
The easiest, no-fail way to wear it this year is with the true blue, good ol’ fashioned jean jacket. No accents, embellishments, distress marks, funky cuts or trendy crops. Finally, trends have come full circle and returned to the basics.
The 1969 denim jacket with a jericho wash at The Gap is the perfect coat for spring. Wear it with a flowy white cotton sundress, lace shorts and a tank or even pair your denim with denim, just make sure they are different colors. It’s OK to wear light blue with dark now. And no, we won’t tease you and call it a “Canadian tuxedo.” Jericho Wash 1969 Denim Jacket, $69.99 (plus 2% Cash Back), gap.com
White is always the color of summer, and that especially rings true for your outerwear. The lighter shade brightens up your jacket for the warmer weather. Rather than the various colored denim trends of the past (red, teal, yellow), white is crisp, clean and classy.
Try The Gap’s 1969 denim jacket with a white wash. This is a great option for fashionistas who are still not sold on wearing blue on blue, but want to have the weight and comfort of a jean jacket to match with their favorite skinnies. Flashback to the ‘90s
OK, maybe that jacket from ‘99 is cool, after all. You will see denim outerwear take other shapes this season, from vests to bomber jackets, like this classic bomber jacket. Denim Bomber Jacket, $44.95 (plus 2% Cash Back), at gap.com
Trendy options like this tend to best flatter the younger crowd, but if you wear it right, any age can pull it off. Especially a vest, like this simple, light blue, cropped denim vest. See it on top of a maxi dress, to add some texture and layers. 1969 Denim Vest, $29.99 (plus 2% Cash Back), gap.com
