Ruby Girl: Making Kate Spade outfits on an Old Navy budget
Lindsey Herzog of Ruby Girl is set out to make fashion work on a non-limitless budget. She is inspired by people, the beauty that comes out of the mundane and her favorite thing is to find hidden gems for less. Meet Lindsey …
Where I’m based: Minneapolis, Minn.
How long I’ve been blogging: Two and a half years
Blog/business basics: Ruby Girl is a personal style blog with a serious bent toward urban prepster. I love making Kate Spade outfits happen on an Old Navy budget, integrating high-quality purchases here and there amidst great finds.
Ruby Girl features helpful shopping guides. I have an entire page for bargain picks, where I hand-select a collection of fabulous outfit pieces, which are at least 50 percent off or cost less than $35. I also founded the Fashion & Faith community, which is housed on a page of my blog. Ruby Girl is also a hub for style tips and tricks. My latest how-to centered around thrifting, with invaluable hints for tackling the task.
What do you enjoy most about blogging? It is so wonderful to have an outlet for this passion I’ve had since childhood. Through Ruby Girl, my pash-for-fash (haha) gets a chance to move from my daydreams to reality. I adore translating fresh new trends to fit my style, while still being willing to take some risks. It’s a blast to connect with the fashionably conscious all over the world through Ruby Girl. There are heaps of glorious inspiration all over the (internet).
Guilty pleasure: When I buy brownie mix, it is solely for the batter. I eat it by the spoonful. Let’s just say that when I “make brownies,” the oven is never actually turned on.
Last thing I bought: A grey tote bag from Mango!
What have you learned about making fashion work on a budget? Always look up discount codes for the company in your search engine. Wait if you possibly can for seasonal sales before purchasing. It is still considered “shopping smart” to splurge on critical wardrobe pieces or rare-find new trends, as long as you don’t overspend on other pieces.
How would you define your style? Feminine and bold, with preppy influence and an urban flare.
What trends are catching your eye right now? Midi skirts, printed pant-suits and knee-high gladiators.
What is your favorite occasion to dress for? Fashion shows and events — definitely! We have lively Fashion Weeks right here in Minneapolis, and I will be heading to Fashion Week in NYC this September. I’ve been planning my wardrobe for months!
