Easy & kid friendly April Fools’ Day trick recipes
April Fools’ Day is prime time for fun. Get your kids in on the action with some “trick” recipes.
The beauty of these recipes is that they’re kid-friendly. Enlist a child’s help in the kitchen to fool another adult.
It’s the one day of the year we say, let them play with their food. Plan ahead with the beverages by pouring strawberry or cherry gelatin in glasses and chill until set. Sink a straw in the middle, and watch your kids try to take a sip. Another easy one? Squeeze the jelly out of a filled doughnut, replace it with mayo, and serve to Dad.
We guarantee these April Fool’s Day recipes will bring laughter to your household:
Cake “grilled cheese sandwich”:
Buy a ready-made pound cake from the store, along with a bit of tinted ready-made white icing, and you have a pretty sweet “grilled cheese sandwich.”
Ingredients (Shop Target for Cash Back):
Sara Lee Pound cake
Betty Crocker White Icing
Red and yellow coloring gel
Butter
How to:
Simply slice the cake into ½-inch slices, melt butter in a broad frying pan and grill the cake a bit. While “toast” cools, mix a few drops of yellow and one drop of red food coloring into the icing. Play with the colors until you have a cheese-colored icing. Spread icing on one slice and top with another.
Banana “hot dog”:
Replace the hot dog with a banana, and let peanut butter and strawberry jam stand in for mustard and ketchup and you’ll have a lunch that’s even more nutritious than the fat-filled hot dog.
Ingredients (Shop Sam’s Club for Cash Back):
Hot dog rolls
Peanut butter
Bananas
Strawberry jam
How to:
Simply fill the bottom of the bun with peanut butter (for a more realistic “mustard” look, add a drop of yellow food coloring to your peanut butter), top with the banana, and zigzag the “ketchup” (strawberry jam) on top. If you have no cake-decorating supplies, purchase jam in a squeeze bottle. This is simple enough for the kids to help make.
Mashed potato “ice cream sundae”:
They’ll be in for a big surprise when they take a bite out of this “ice cream,” topped with “caramel sauce” and a cherry.
Ingredients (Shop Walmart for Cash Back):
Classic waffle cones
Instant mashed potatoes
Chicken gravy
Maraschino cherries
How to:
An ice-cream scoop comes in handy to “scoop” the potatoes onto the cone, for a realistic look. Drizzle gravy over the top and top the concoction with a cherry to really fool your loved one.
