How to lose 5 pounds during the holiday season
By Brittany Anas
Scared of the Holiday 5? It’s the equally devious cousin of the Freshman 15. Typically, during the holiday season, we worry about packing on extra pounds starting with snacking on Halloween candy in early November and eating the biggest meal of the year on Thanksgiving. Then comes the parade of cookie exchanges, egg nog and rich holiday feasts near Christmas.
But let’s take a second to reframe your thinking: The holiday season means planning family meals (and colorful veggies and squashes look good on the table) and maybe you get some time off work that you can use to get some more sleep and exercise.
So, what if we told you that you could not only fend off those seasonal pounds, but that you could actually lose weight between now and Christmas? Here’s four ways to help you take off some pounds between now and the end of December.
- Plan your splurge days. So you love sugar cookies or peppermint hot chocolate or that pecan pie that your aunt brings to Thanksgiving every year. Don’t deprive yourself. A few days of overeating won’t throw off your diet plans. But you’re best off if you can plan for them. For example, you’re going to a holiday party and you know you’ll want to enjoy dessert and a larger dinner. Eat a light — but filling — lunch of vegetable soup and a side salad with a non-fat dressing earlier in the day. It’s all about moderation.
- Rethink your holiday traditions: If Thanksgiving in your household revolves around a big meal and lounging on the couch to watch football — well, yup, that sounds about normal. But, add something special to your holiday and get the whole family involved — like signing up for a turkey run the morning of Thanksgiving. Bonus points if you train between now and the run. Or, maybe a spirited game of flag football in the back yard before the game comes on T.V.
- Take advantage of gym specials: Come January, the gyms will be packed with the “resolution” seekers. November and December? Not so much. You’ll find great deals on bootcamps and individual training at gyms in your neighborhood.
- Grab a cup of tea: De-stress with a cup of green tea. It’s as close to a miracle drink as you can get: It boosts your metabolism, is known to prevent some cancers and boosts your immune system — just to name a few of its special powers.
