If you can’t wait to take in weeks of skiing, snowboarding, ice skating, luging, curling and other winter sports, you’re not alone. The Sochi Winter Olympics kick off Feb. 6, and, in the spirit of the games, Celebrity Baby Scoop has profiled moms and dads who have participated in the events both present and past.
Kristi Yamaguchi: The former Olympic figure skater, and mom to two girls and wife to fellow past Olympian, Bret Hedican, a hockey player, will be in Sochi, serving as the digital ambassador to the U.S. Olympic committee. The winner of Dancing with the Stars tells Celebrity Baby Scoop the Olympics are about “coming together in peace and competing in goodwill and good sport.”
“I hope that everyone is able to do that as well,” she tells the website. “It’s all about these amazing athletes who have worked their entire lives to showcase their dreams. I’ll be cheering for all the athletes!”
Mike Smith: The goaltender for the NHL’s Phoenix Coyotes will be in Sochi, playing for Canada, but he tells Celebrity Baby Scoop his pregnant wife (Brigitte Acton, a Canadian alpine skiier) and two kids will be staying home because of safety concerns.
Scott Hamilton: The 1984 Olympic figure skating champion (and dad of two boys) is now an NBC figure skating analyst.
Tonya Harding: The scandalized figure skater (who could forget that shocking attack on Nancy Kerrigan?) tells Access Hollywood she doesn’t care what the public thinks of her.
“Everybody is entitled to their opinion; it was 20 years ago,” Harding, who has a son, tells the entertainment show. “(Ex-husband Jeff Gillooly and I) both have gone our separate ways. Get over it, OK? It’s 20 years. I’m sure that she’s done and I am, too.”
On her life now, Tonya says she’s loving being a “mommy.”
Jenny Schmidgall-Potter: The gold medal-winning hockey player, mom to a daughter and a son, says she believes in working hard.
“I think being the best you can be and trying to be one of the best players in the world keeps me focused and that my family is there is share it with me,” she tells the website.
