Get Twiggy with it: ’60s-inspired minidresses offer maximum style
Everything old is new again, and, thank goodness for that, because we have been hoping for a comeback of the 1960s minidress.
(A little fashion-meets-history morsel about the era: Designer Mary Quant is credited with making the short skirt popular during the swinging ’60s.)
We’re seeing lots of renditions of the mini today, especially at Free People—with ultra-short dresses dominating new arrivals. The Maribelle mini, $118, is a gauzy sleeveless dress with crocheted details and can be winterized by wearing it as a tunic with a cardigan thrown on top. The brand’s Wanderer mini dress, $128, with its exaggerated bell sleeves, has us looking forward to music festival season.
Over at Nordstrom Rack, we spotted a gorgeous Diane Von Furstenberg mini dress, on sale for $129.97, and began dreaming up ways to wear it this spring. Ready to get Twiggy with it? Here’s how to accessorize this short pink dress:
Pinkie swear: One of our fave ways to wear pink is with more pink. For an ultra-feminine look, mix a bright, bold pink with soft, nude pink makeup and accessories. Glam it up with a touch of gold. These light pink emerald cut Kate Spade studs, $38 at Piperlime, put a sweet, finishing touch on an outfit. Get a perfectly pink pout with a swipe of Glossy Gloss to Go, $7 at Sephora, in either “Confectionary” or “Candy Necklace.” Then, break up the pink with some gold, like this Michael Kors heart charm bracelet, $125 at Neiman Marcus.
En-trenched: For a classic spring-time look, layer on a trench jacket and look instantly pulled together. This on Burberry Sandringham mid-length trench coat, $1,695 is giving us serious spring fever. For more affordable options, we found a classic belted trench, $54.90, and a collarless trench coat, $42.90, both from Forever 21. Loop on a watercolor floral scarf, like this infinity scarf, $9.99 from Charlotte Russe, or a silky square scarf to harmonize the bright pink dress and neutral trench.
Nautical and nice: One of our fave ways to remix a dress is to layer on a cropped T-shirt or sweater to give the illusion that we’re wearing a skirt. For a laid-back nautical look, try this striped crop top, $21.99 at Athleta, paired with a fun, statement necklace like a lacquered bib necklace, $10.80 from Forever 21. Add a Michael Kors wristlet, $128 from Bloomingdale’s, for a desk-to-dinner look.
