The money-saving guide to the best winter coats for kids
By Aimee Heckel
Although putting a coat on any kid under the age of 5 is harder than putting pantyhose on an angry cat, it’s either that or listen to your kids whine about being cold. Truly, it’s a lose-lose situation here — wrestle vs. whine — so we’d like to ease the burden on you a bit.
We’ve scoured the web for our favorite functional and fashionable winter coats for kids — for the best prices. Use these tips to save you money and maybe you can use it to buy some stickers; don’t say we’re the only parents who bribe our kids into their coats using stickers? Didn’t think so.
For the kid who won’t wear anything but pink: this North Face jacket in bright pink with a fur-lined hood.
Some kids get stuck on one color. Try to get one of those kids in a black jacket (no matter how practical the color, in terms of cleanliness) and you are setting yourself up for failure. Instead, get the brightest, pinkest, fluffiest, furriest, fashionablest (that’s a word because Mom says so) coat that Macy’s sells. It even has a belt, which kids love like they love bubbles. Best of all, it’s North Face, so you know it’ll last for at least eight hand-me-downs or be a good candidate to consign. This makes the $199 price tag worth it.
Money-saving tip: Use a Macy’s coupon like a boss and you can save money (hello, 20 percent off during the holiday preview sale). Then pair it with 6 percent Cash Back from ShopAtHome.com.
For the kid who absolutely refuses to wear a coat and/or thinks coats are monsters trying to eat his arms off: a Ralph Lauren vest.
Don’t underestimate Mom. Just because you cannot get his wiggly little arms into the sleeves doesn’t mean you can’t at least try to preserve the heat of his torso. A vest is a great alternative, when a jacket just isn’t happening. Plus, aww, how cute. At $125, don’t forget those aforementioned coupons. Or add this to you Cyber Monday list.
