Most holiday shoppers still shopping, look to sales after Dec. 26
By Jay Keller
Unlike 2012, where 91 percent of shoppers still had shopping left to do now, only 14 percent of holiday shoppers are reporting they’ve finished their gift-buying endeavors.
While those who have started tackling their Christmas list still have a ways to go, almost a third of consumers had not started shopping as of December 1 and 77 percent of shoppers expect to shop at the last minute.
While gifting may not be a top priority for most Americans, looking and feeling good still matters and is important to them during the holiday season.
Haircuts, new outfits, especially shoes and accessories, are top-of-mind for those who have holiday plans with friends or family to celebrate Hanukkah, Christmas and New Year’s Eve.
American Express reports that spending on personal care and grooming are areas trending upward for holiday preparations: haircut/styling (37% vs. 32% in 2011), purchasing a new outfit (30% vs. 24%), treating themselves to new shoes or accessories (23% vs. 16%) as well as spa treatments (6% vs. 4%).
Holiday shopping is in full swing and many consumers are waiting until after Christmas to shop for themselves. And, retailers are banking on that fact.
Since 2012, over half of all shoppers, or 57 percent, say they plan to shop on December 26 and expect to spend an average of $187, according to American Express.
Just over a third of respondents to the American Express survey, or 35 percent, say they’ll take advantage of post-holiday sales to buy for themselves. As early-bird shoppers will continue to get a head start on next year’s gift lists, nine percent also admit to buying this year’s holiday gifts for others at post-Christmas sales.
And, for those who received gift cards during holiday celebrations, the week after Christmas is a perfect time to put these to use and nearly half of those receiving gift cards expect to spend them within one month.
“Most Americans are just over half way done with their shopping, and many have plans to spend even after the Christmas holiday,” said Claire Bennett, EVP, Loyalty and Membership Benefits at American Express.
