How to make moving easier for kids
by Melissa Brodsky
Moving can be both traumatic and an adventure, particularly for the kids. Whether your family wants to move or has to move, it can weigh heavily on the children.
There are a few things you can do to prepare your children for the move and alleviate the stress that they will most likely feel.
House hunt as a family: Allow the kids to be involved, whether it’s online search or physically going to see houses. Even if the kids don’t have the final say in the new home, at least they will feel as though they did.
Create a family wish list: Make a list of what each person is looking for in the new house. Is it a walk-in closet? Jack and Jill bathrooms? A swimming pool? It doesn’t matter, even the littlest wish should go on the list. Make it fun and exciting. And who knows, maybe you’ll actually find a house that fulfills the wishes of everyone!
Allow the kids to play decorator: If budget allows, let the kids choose new bedding for their new rooms. And perhaps, allow them to pick out their wall and carpet color…within reason, of course. Remind them that they’ll have to live with the colors they choose, at least for a few years.
Farewell Friends party: Even if the move is only five minutes away from your current residence, allow the kids to invite their friends over for a Farewell Party. Have a notebook handy so that they can collect their friends phone numbers and email addresses so they can keep in touch.
Get them involved in the process: If you are having a garage sale to lighten your packing load, then let the kids help choose what to sell and also, allow them to be present at the sale.Have them create Garage Sale signs to stick on the front lawn. Maybe create their own tables to man. Let them pack up their own boxes and decorate them with markers and stickers to personalize them.
